Obituary for Claire Elizabeth Twardosky (Phaneuf)

Claire Elizabeth (Phaneuf) Twardosky, 85, a longtime resident of Nashua, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving children on 6 November 2018, at her home in Nashua, after her short battle with heart disease. Claire was born on 7 May 1933 at home in Merrimack NH, to the late Gilbert G. Phaneuf of Manchester and the late Vera E. (Cunningham) Galletley of Milford. She is predeceased by her Husband, Marion Edward Twardosky; her Sisters, Joan M. Carpentiere and Rita A. Connery; her Grandson, Jon (Sonny) R. Greenleaf and her Son-in-Law, Juan L. Acosta.

Claire attended local schools and received her diploma from the first graduating class of Merrimack High School, just one out of 12 students. Claire had a love of the arts, music, poetry and singing. She was in the cast of the Gay-Nineties and Variety Show, where she sang in the choir and performed on stage, that was sponsored by the Merrimack Police Department. Her working career took her to Sprague Electric Company and then on to Sanders Associates (now BAE) as an Electronics Quality Control Inspector. She became interested in local politics and was named Ward 6 Chairwoman for Thyng for US Senator Committee of Nashua. She was a member of the Greater Nashua Young Republican Club.

Claire had a natural gift of music as she taught herself how to play the piano and guitar. She wrote and sang her own songs. When she had the radio on she would just start singing and dancing about as if no one was watching to the sounds of 60's and 70's music. She loved all genres and styles of music. She was so full of spirit. She enjoyed bowling on leagues and won several trophies which adorn her home to this day. Her interests were varied and many to include with her family, shooting hoops in the driveway, playing cribbage, camping in the mountains, and fishing for trout in local lakes or at the ocean for stripers. She loved the beach. She played billiards with the members of the senior center and was called a "Pool Shark". Around her home, she loved gardening vegetables and her flowers of all kinds to attract butterflies and humming birds. Her front yard graces cacti and patches of several varieties of flowers, which when in full bloom is a spectacular colorful sight. She was a wonderful cook and is known by local neighbors for her Cherry Squares and her Mac and Cheese. For a period of time, Claire loved to paint with water color and sketch in pencil and her children display her masterpieces in their homes. Her dressing style was eclectic, as if she were setting new trends. If she loved it, she wore it. She was her own woman.

Once she became an empty nester, she and her husband, Ed, became avid garage/yard sale adventurers, where she would find old furniture to re-purpose with paint, decoupage or re-staining and sell in her own sale for a profit. She found many "treasures" to accessorize her home with. She recently became interested in genealogy with her daughter, Kathy, and went to meet some of her extended relatives that she never knew about. Claire was a member of the Nashua Senior Center and also of the INSPIRE Pulmonary Support Group.

Claire is survived by three daughters and one son: Susan Greenleaf Acosta and James A. Sterzinar of Kissimmee, FL; Jon A. Greenleaf and Lisa E. Grigg of Merrimack, NH; Melody Greenleaf Higgins and husband Joseph of Nashua, NH; Katherine Soucy Kuzmick and husband David of Nashua, NH; one Granddaughter, seven Grandsons, five Great Grandchildren and a pair of Great Grand twins on the way, several Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, loving neighbors and friends including the Doctors and Staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Home Health and Hospice Care Staff and Hospice House of Merrimack.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Claire's memory may be made to either: INSPIRE, PO Box 117, Nashua, NH 03061 or to: Home Health and Hospice Care, 7 Executive Park Dr., Merrimack, NH 03054.

SERVICES: All are welcome to attend calling hours on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 from 1-3PM at the Davis Funeral Home, 1 Lock St., Nashua. A Celebration of Life Service will start at 3PM, also at the funeral home. Burial will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
