Claire Patricia Watterson passed away on November 13, 2017, after an all too brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Claire was born in Queens on March 11, 1939 and spent her formative years in New York City. She moved to New England to attend Lowell State Teacher’s College and then settled in Nashua, NH, where she lived for almost 50 years.
Family was the center of Claire’s world. She was a devoted and supportive wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother, and regarded her family as her greatest legacy. She was also very involved in the neighborhood, making many friends and forging many enduring relationships. Claire loved books and crossword puzzles, classical music, and everything Irish. She was a proud feminist and an astute student of politics.
Claire had a huge heart, a welcoming spirit, and a quick wit – often remarking that humor was a sign of intelligence. Claire loved to tell stories. If you were fortunate enough to cross paths with her, there’s a good chance you heard one or two. She was also guided by her deep faith in God, as a member of Immaculate Conception church for many years.
As a public school teacher for 25 years, Claire taught students ranging in age from kindergarten through junior high throughout her career; but 7th grade held a special place in her heart. She loved working with children as they matured, but were still young enough to be silly at times. Claire was passionate about teaching mathematics, and was committed to making this universal language accessible to all.
Claire is survived by her husband of 49 years, Arthur C. Watterson, Jr, as well as her three sons and their spouses; Terence and Beth Watterson of Hudson, NH; Scott and Lissa Watterson of Cumming, GA; and Todd Watterson and Tamara Fucile of Washington, DC. Her eight grandchildren – Abby and Jodi; Grace, Haley and Natalie; and Caroline, Bridget and Ryan – were the light of her life. Claire is also survived by her sister, Sr. [Margaret] Ellen Burke of Stanfordville, NY, and her nieces Marianne, Eileen and Jean McCaffery. Claire joins her mother and father, Thomas and Margaret Burke; her older sister, Marie McCaffery; and her nephew, Ed McCaffery, in the next life.
