Obituary for Mary Prouty (Haren)
Mary Haren Prouty, died on November 10, 2017 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH. She was 82.
Mary Evelyn Haren was born on December 22, 1934, daughter of John William and Myrtle (Smith) Haren. She grew up in East Orange, NJ and Mountainside, NJ. The family summered in Derby, VT on Lake Salem.
She was a graduate of East Orange High School and in 1954 she received an AA Degree from Vermont Junior College in Montpelier, VT. In 1956 she graduated from St. Lawrence University with a BS Degree in Psychology. She was a lifelong member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and a member of Psi Chi, the national psychology honor society.
On December 8, 1956 she married Gene E. Prouty, of Swanton, VT in the Community Presbyterian Church in Mountainside, NJ. After her marriage, she lived in Barre, VT and for 28 years in Cherry Hill, NJ. In 1993 Gene and Mary followed their children to Nashua, NH. The family spent summers at their camp on Maquam Shore in Swanton, VT.
Mary was active in several social and civic organizations during the years. She served as a Deacon at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Cherry Hill. From 1980-1985 she was a member of the Norwich University Alumni Board of Directors. In 1995, she became a member of the Norwich University Board of Fellows. Mary was also on the Norwich University Cemetery Board.
Mary was a professional tour guide in the historic area of Philadelphia, PA. For fifteen years she was a volunteer guide for the National Park Service at Independence National Historic Park in Philadelphia. During that time she was a member and served on the council of the Friends of Independence National Historical Park. The highlight of her guide years was giving a tour to Mrs. Barbara Bush for which she received a personal note of thanks.
Mary is survived by her husband of 61 years, Gene, two daughters - Bonnie Prouty Cote and husband Scott, Amy Prouty Gill and her husband Christopher, and one son John and his wife Stephanie. Her seven grandchildren - Christopher (his wife Andrea), Maryalice and Peter Gill; Andrew (his wife Meredith) and Abigail Cote; Rebecca Eskeland (her husband Nathan) and Charles Prouty. Mary also has three greatgrandsons - Connor Gill, Jason Eskeland and Sebastian Cote. Along with several nieces and nephews and their families. She was pre-deceased by her brothers John W. Haren, Jr. and Robert Lee Haren, and her sister Nancy Haren Sheridan.
SERVICES: Funeral services will be private. Interment will be at the Norwich University Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s memory to the Norwich University Cemetery Association, c/o Mr. David Whaley, VP, Norwich University, Northfield, VT 05663.
