Verna June (Sunderland) Howe, 99, of Hudson, died peacefully at the Fairview Nursing Home on Sunday, October 29, 2017 surrounded by members of her family.
She was born on June 23, 1918, in Aberdeen, SD, a daughter of the late George Arthur and Myrtle (Drown) Sunderland.
Mrs. Howe was the widow of Warren B. Howe, who died on October 7, 1999. She moved to Nashua in 1963.
She is remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is also remembered for her wonderful sense of humor. Her family also remembers fondly her love of crocheting and embroidery. Her social and friendly nature was abundant and she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. In her younger years, she enjoyed tending to her flowers and gardens. She would also cook and bake especially her favorite chocolate chip cookies.
Mrs. Howe was an elementary and middle school teacher throughout her career. Her teaching career began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Roxbury, VT. After moving to Hudson, NH, she began teaching the 5th grade. She was a member of the Nashua Retired Teachers Association and the AARP. At one time, she and her husband were members of the Grange.
She was a graduate of Northfield (VT) High School. Following her graduation from high school, she attended Johnson Teacher’s College in Johnson, VT and graduated with the Class of 1938.
She was a member of the Northfield United Methodist Parish of Northfield Falls, VT.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Ida Fae and Ernest Gauthier, Roberta and Glover Robinson and her brother, Wayne Sunderland.
Mrs. Howe is survived by her children and their spouses, Rhoda Lee Lambert of Hudson, NH, Marcella Ann Howe Nolan and her husband, Timothy of Ithaca, NY, Jeffrey Howe and his wife, Linnea of White Bear Lake, MN; her beloved grandchildren, Cindy Lee and Ken Wester, Scott Lambert, Emily Michelle Nolan, Benjamin and Carrie Howe, Ian and Truc Howe, Nicholas and Michelle Howe and William Howe; her great grandchildren, Hannah Lee, Ethan Nicholas Lee, Adrianna, Khloe, Rosamond, Benjamin Jr. and Henry; and her surrogate daughter and dear family friend, Linda Roche.
SERVICES: Funeral Services will be private and held at the convenience of her family. Interment prayers and burial will be held at the convenience of her family in Vermont. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Northfield United Methodist Parish, 152 South Main St., Northfield, VT 05663 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
